The bell jar -sylvia plath
I started reading the bell jar because of the 90s TV show on MTV Daria in which the main character is a cynical bookworm. She mentions the book in one of the episodes and It caught my attention because well this character is rather mercurial; you can tell whoever wrote her put a lot of thought into her.
You can see similarities between Jane and Doreen, as well as Daria and Esther. Especially in the later seasons of the show when she begins to fade into her own melancholic passĂ©. I can’t help but see Betsy as Quinn, Esther as Daria, and Jane as Doreen. Now that might just be because the archetypes of each character are centered in such a simple format, but one can’t help but wonder.
Why would they choose to mention this book specifically? Is there any semblance between her own feminist bias and the shows characterization of society.
